“Gift made to the deity or deposited in a temple with a religious intention.” This is how the Larousse defines the word offering. It is also the title attributed by Mai Trung Thứ to this work. Made in 1968 from ink and gouache on silk, the artist chooses a small format, suitable for the intimacy of this moment. The model with fine features proudly holds three apples
in a bowl. She is wearing a traditional outfit, the áo dài, and her almond-shaped eyes emphasize her Asian origins. Her hieratic figure is sublimated by a halo surrounding her and recalling the sacred aspect of her gesture. The restricted chromatic range is concentrated on two complementary colors, yellow and blue, which blend delicately. From an apparently simple theme, Mai Trung Thứ, eternal patriot pays tribute to the customs of his country.
