Towards Montmartre, 1949 Mixed media with pastel and chalk on cardboard signed lower left Dimensions : 55 x 46 cm French post-impressionist painter born in Fresne-Saint-Mamès, Claude-Emile Schuffenecker was part of the Pont-Aven School. In 1872, while taking classes with Carolus-Duran and Paul Baudry, he met Gauguin with whom he went to paint in Pont-Aven. The two men became friends and together they studied the paintings of the masters at the Louvre Museum. In 1884, after being refused entry to the Salon, he was one of the founders of the Salon des Indépendants and became friends with Guillaumin, Pissarro, Morisot and Manet. Schuffenecker's work is indeed a series of quotations, marked by various influences, pointillism, Degas, Gauguin, etc. He was also a great collector and when he divorced, his exceptional collection, including 7 Cézanne, 7 Van Gogh and many Gauguins, was liquidated and dispersed.
