Peter LELY (1618-1680), ascribed Portrait of a lady Oil on canvas, probably around 1650 134 x 105,5 cm, frame: 154 x 126 cm Expertise: Handwritten expert opinion by Dr. Paul Wescher (1896-1974): "The painting of a young lady with Cupid in the background shown overleaf I consider to be a characteristic and impeccable work by the English court painter Peter Lely, who after van Dyck was the preferred portraitist of English society." Alastair Lang wrote in an e-mail in 2012, "I think that the Portrait of a Lady in blue at a putto-fountain most probably is by Lely - an early picture of around 1650. ...There is just a possibility that the portrait could be by Lely's early rival, Weesop (about whom very little is known)." By Weesop is meant John WEESOP (active 1641-1649).
