Copy most likely belonging to Philippe de Chieze, the inventor of the saloon-type carriage (Berline or Berliner Kalesche) that became famous after the Elector of Brandenburg for whom he was in the pay of gave a fully gilded one to Louis XIV in 1683. The work, rare to find complete, is one of the masterpieces of Hippology; Antoine de Pluvinel was Henry III's first squire and in 1594, under Henry IV, he was allowed to establish his own riding school where he perfected the method of dressage
Folio, (375 x 245mm). Engraved frontispiece on two endpapers, 4 portraits outside text, 58 double-page plates, two-column text in French and German (browning mainly to text. Eighteenth-century binding with leather spine, gilt title (flaws and faults). Provenance: PC and P. Dechieze (signature to title pages and eyelet) probably Philip de la Chieze (1629-1673) quartermaster general for Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg
