Lot of two gardening works in fine French binding of the period including the first translation of Whately's famous Observations on Modern Gardening, illustrated by descriptions (London, 1770), considered the most important 18th-century book on English gardens. 2 volumes, 4to, (260 x 190mm). 10 plates out of text in the first and one in the second volume, several vignettes and illustrations in the text (lightly browned, some browning, water gouge to the upper outer margin at the first 5 endpapers of the second volume that does not touch the text). Coeval binding in full bazzana leather, with title and decorations in gilt on spine, red boards, marbled paper endpapers and green silk bookmarks. [IN LOT WITH:] WHATELY Thomas (1726-1772).
