First edition of the Commedia edited by Foscolo, of which a first volume Discorso sul testo e su le opinioni diverse prevalenti intorno alla storia e alla emendazione critica della Commedia di Dante printed in London by Pickering appeared in 1825. Though manuscripts of the commentaries on the three canticles were almost ready, the poet's death in 1827 interrupted the project. It was Giuseppe Mazzini a decade later who tracked down the autographs to prepare the present edition of which he signed the introduction anonymously introducing himself as Un italiano
3 volumes (of 4), 8vo, (223 x 146mm). Portrait of Foscolo on the frontispiece, a panel with facsimile of the script and a vignette depicting the author's tomb to the first volume, portrait of Dante and panel of hell to the second, portrait of Dante, plates of purgatory and paradise to the third (Not present is the 4 volume with the Canzoni and the Epistle to Can Grande della Scala , slightly browned and some sporadic browning, more flowering to the portrait of Foscolo). Preserved illustrated paperback, coeval binding with leather spine titled in gold (slight defects)
