Study but genuine copy of the first edition of this rare illustrated work on automata, horology and hydraulics, adapted from Les raisons des force mouvantes avec diverses machines printed in Frankfurt in 1615. Caus was an architect and court engineer in Heidelberg, pioneering the construction of life-size automata, many of which are illustrated here such as a fire engine, musical organs and water clocks. Folio, (345 x 245mm). Frontispiece, 26 plates out of text, illustrations in text (Missing engraved frontispiece, uniformly browned, some staining, slight tears to outer margins, tear to lower white margin of last three papers).
