doctrina clarè, dilucidè & brevitur traditur. Geneva: Chouet, 1617-1618. Restored but complete copy of all its parts including the Nova de motu terrae (A-D4) of this rare work on astronomy. Baranzano, a Barnabite father, corresponded with Galileo and Bacon and argued in this work for the validity of the Copernican system and the heliocentric theory. When his superiors learned of this, they demanded, on pain of excommunication, a written retraction of his adherence; the abjuration was not long in coming and is contained in the Nova de motu terrae qui bound at the end of the work in which the author is forced to declare that he had previously fallen into error. A not very well known work that testifies to the spread and study of Copernican theories and the clash between Science and the Church in the early 16th century. 3 parts in one volume, 4to, (227 x 157mm). 1 folded map, two folded tables, frontispiece within architectural frame, several illustrations in text (fascicle 2+ inserted after fascicle A, conservation restoration with invasive results using Japanese paper to recto or verso of sheets, stabilized damp staining affecting upper margins). Modern full vellum binding with title on spine BARANZANO, Giovanni Antonio Redento (1590-1622). Uranoscopia seu De coelo in qua universa coelorum doctrina clarè, dilucidè & brevitur traditur. Geneva: Chouet, 1617-1618.
