Cong in dark celadon jade marbled with rust veins, the stone with a beautiful polish.
Dim. 10,5 x 4,8 x 4,8 cm
PROVENANCE
Collection of M. D. (ethnographer and archaeologist), acquired in the 1930s, then by descent.
NOTE
The Cong tube is a complex-looking object with a cylindrical section inscribed in a square. Most often found in a funerary context, associated with other jade artifacts (bi discs, axes), it seems to have had a ritual function, which is not precisely known.
In the "Rites of the Zhou", it is symbolically associated with the earth while the bi disk is associated with the sky.
