Bembe people, Democratic Republic of Congo, 1st third of the 20th century
Rare antique armchair
for the use of customary chiefs or colonial circles. Inspired by Western models, this armchair is caned under the arms, the backrest uprights decorated with two figures and the back engraved with floral motifs, two elephants and a human head.
Carved wood, rattan, beautiful patina of use alternating light brown and dark brown.
Height 70 Width 51 Depth 42,5 cm.
Provenance : Collected in-situ by Fernand OLIVEDA, Knight of the Legion of Honor and Chief Administrator of the colonies from 1888 to 1930 (Madagascar, Senegal, Congo). In 1925, he was Chief of the Secretariat of the General Governor of the Middle Congo.
