VIGEE LE BRUN, Elisabeth (1755-1842), [ATELIER DE] Portrait of Empress Elisabeth Alexeïevna of Russia. After 1801. Oil on cardboard, pasted on panel. 23.7 x 18.4 cm On the back, an old illegible inscription. Our portrait is to be compared with another portrait of Elisabeth Alexeïevna (oil on canvas; 63 x 52 cm) executed by Elisabeth Vigée le Brun in 1801 during her stay in Dresden together with a portrait of Alexander I of Russia. Both portraits were given to Elisabeth Alexeyevna's sister, Princess Maria Elisabeth Wilhelmina (1782-1808), and in 1909 they were kept in the princely collection in Braunschweig (see the book by Grand Duke Nicholas Michailovich "The Empress Elisabeth Alexeyevna, Wife of Alexander I", in Russian, 3 vols., St. Petersburg, 1908-1909, especially volume 2). The large portrait of Elizabeth Alexeyevna was sold at public auction in 2005 and is currently in a private collection in the United States.
