During a stay in Naples in the spring of 1835, Robert Kummer visited the Blue Grotto on Capri together with his artist friends Heinrich Jakob Fried (1802-1870) and Friedrich Eduard Pape (1817-1905); in the present small painting, he probably still drew on sketches from that time decades later.
