Elephant tearing off a stump circa 1940 Lost wax bronze proof with green patina signed on the terrace, bearing the stamp "Susse Frs Edts Paris" and the inscription "cire perdue" H. 39 cm W. 45 cm Franco-Swiss sculptor Gustav Hierholtz studied in Auguste Rodin's workshop and exhibited at the Salon from 1907. He lived for a time in Algeria, was mobilized for the war and then left for Hanoi from 1919 to 1930. There he directed the school of applied arts, while continuing his creative work: Le Pho, Mai Thu and Vu Cao Dam were among his students. Through his sculptures, he contributed to the influence of Indochinese culture in France: his "Elephant pulling out a stump" used as a draught animal in the rubber plantations, full of exoticism, is the most beautiful illustration!
