RARE AND IMPORTANT DOUBLE SIDED FLAT DESK FROM THE LOUIS XIV PERIOD
Black lacquered, opening with five drawers in the belt arranged two by two around the central drawer. It rests on four arched feet. The top is trimmed with garnet leather and surrounded by an ingot mould.
Louis XIV period
Rich ornamentation in gilt bronze.

Restorations of use and maintenance
This desk belonged to members of the Gage family, descendants of General Thomas Gage (1719-1787) commander in chief of the British forces in North America from 1763 to 1775.
Previously this desk would have belonged to the family of Alexander Hamilton (1757-1804) American politician, financier, intellectual and military officer.
