Canton lacquer screen, China, Qing dynasty, 19th century
A seven-leaf screen, decorated with gold (several tones) and red lacquer on a black background, representing a large Buddhist temple adjoining a palace with pavilions and tree-lined courtyards, in the center a monk on a lotus throne, before him kneeling monks and guardians from four directions, all around men and women bringing offerings on trays, next to a mandarin watching men shooting with bows and arrows (one of them on horseback), with in the foreground (below) various gates watched over by guardians. One panel missing (at least eight originally), the whole disassembled and mounted on two wooden panels screwed to the back (hinged), two leaves (left) misplaced. Cracking, wear in places, some lacquer leaks
