[GUICHENON (Samuel): History of Bresse and Bugey. Containing what happened there of memorable under the Romans, Kings of Bourgongne & of Arles, Emperors, Sires of Baugé, Counts & Dukes of Savoye, & very Christian Kings, until the exchange of the Marquisate of Saluces. With the foundations of abbeys, priories, chartreuses & collegiate churches, origin of towns, chateaux, seigneuries & principal fiefs & genealogies of all the noble families... Divided into four parts... A Lyon, chez Jean Antoine Huguetan & Marc Ant. Ravaud, 1650. One volume. 21,5 by 35,5 cm. (32)-109-(3)-133-(3)-113-(3)-399-(3)-253-(35)-259 pages. Full posterior binding in marbled basane, large red title-piece, spine with 6 nerves, very nicely decorated boxes. The boards are framed with a triple gilt fillet, with the arms of the BAUME-MONTREVEL family in the center, rich roulette on the edges. Some light rubbing on the second board, otherwise very good condition of the binding. False-title page restored in the margin. Some traces of light marginal wetness at the end of the volume (not serious). Old discreet handwritten ownership (V Orcel de Chatillon) on the title page, some foxing without seriousness. First edition of this collection of charters and titles serving as evidence for the history of Bresse and Bugey. Numerous coats of arms (about 170) engraved in the text. Samuel Guichenon, French historian and genealogist (1607-1664) was historiographer of France, he worked on Bresse and Savoy. An esteemed work of which the copies are rare (Brunet). The Baume-Montrevel family is an illustrious Bresse family studied by Guichenon in his work. It appeared in the middle of the 12th century and died out in 1794. A rare book, here in a complete copy, and in a very nice condition.
