♦ Toto-San and Kaka-San. S.l.n.d. [ca. 1890?]. Manuscript in-8 square of 20 leaves including a title, tobacco morocco, jansenist, interior frame formed of four bamboo canes mosaic lemon, lining and brocaded silk endpapers (Mercier sr de Cuzin). Complete autograph manuscript of La Chanson des vieux époux, signed twice by Pierre Loti. The text evokes the tender complicity of an old Japanese couple and addresses the theme of mourning. Some passages, found on pages 2, 7 and 12, are not reproduced in the edition of the Complete Works published by Calmann Lévy in 1894. Page 8 ends with a six-line paragraph that begins "In the roller box...", followed by the words "(to be continued)" and Loti's signature. This paragraph is crossed out in pencil and resumed on the next page, with the modification "In the little car...", which is found in the final text. From the libraries of Louis Barthou and Pierre Guérin.
