The author, from Ville-sur-Arce, was administrator of the parks, gardens and nurseries of the imperial palaces.
Copy of a present offered to General Duroc (1772-1813), appointed marshal of the Palace, specially in charge of watching over Napoleon's safety, hence his nickname of Napoleon's shadow. Aide-de-camp to General Bonaparte in Italy, he participated in all the battles of the Empire: Marengo, Austerlitz, Friedland, Essling, Wagram, the Russian campaign. In 1807 he was made Duke of Friuli. Throughout his career, he was in charge of important diplomatic missions.
