Painter and naval officer, Ponroy made many trips, notably to Brazil, to Martinique on board the ship Jean Bart (1866-1867), to the Mediterranean, Algiers, Syracuse, Malta, Smyrna (1870) on board the frigate La Renommée, to Martinique, to Senegal (1873-1874), on board the frigate La Renommée.
