Italian school after Francesco MAZZOLA called the PARMESAN (1503-1540)
Love cutting his bow
Oil on canvas
Old restorations
Size : 140 X 103 cm
Our painting is a copy of the famous painting painted around 1533, described by Vasari and kept in Vienna at the Kunsthistorisches Museum (inv.-Nr.GG_275). Several other copies are kept in public collections:
- Paris, Musée du Louvre, MG 497, Dim : 42 X 30 cm.
- Nantes, Museum of Arts, Inv 2810, Dim 69 X 51 cm.
- Besançon, Museum of Fine Arts and Archaeology, Inv 885.13.1, Dim : 125 X 63 cm
- Museum of Grenoble, Inv M.G. 497, Dim : 40 X 27 cm
- Bourg-en-Bresse, Museum of Brou, Inv. 902.1, Dim : 138 X 105 cm
It is difficult to date the work precisely after the restorations, but the pictorial layer presenting a fine network of homogeneous micro-craquelures reinforces the hypothesis of an ancient work. Our painting is similar in size to the one in the Brou Museum.
