Our drawing corresponds, with some variations, to the scene engraved by Descourtis (1753-1820). Nicolas Antoine Taunay represented several times scenes of villages and harlequinades with itinerant actors, of which a version in oil (the theater of madness) is preserved in the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes of Rio de Janeiro, and another similar one in the Musée des Beaux-Arts of Reims (Inv. 983.29.1)
