Important hand screen called chauri, with turned ivory handle, engraved and inked with red ink. Large
leaf lined with red cloth, hand-stitched, attached to the handle with ivory pegs.

These fans, called chauris, were intended for important people (among others Buddhist monks)
Buddhist monks) during processions and great festivals. Made in Ceylon in the region of Kandy, they are typical of this
are typical of the very refined production of the ivory carvers of this period covering the
XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries (the kingdom of Kandy ended in 1815). Our example is of a remarkable, if not exceptional
