L.A.S. "E" to Count Davillier. Madrid, November 23, 1871. 4 pp. bifeuillet in-8.
Letter from exile to Count Davillier, former officer and first squire of Napoleon III, Having received a "mountain of letters" that arrived from France, the Empress is extremely touched by all these proofs of affection at a time when one counts friends. "They tell me in every letter that the health of the colony is excellent and that my son is working well. They even say that he is growing a lot. The E. asked me the exact day of my arrival. I don't like to tell him because I don't want him to go to the hotel in this cold season to wait for me [...]. She herself was very cold in Avila where she spent her holiday; despite the difference in climate, I was very cold in a room without a fire [...]. So I think it would be unreasonable to do otherwise. If she does not dwell further on the subject of her letter, it is because the memory of the past days is too painful [...]".
A portrait of the Empress after Winterhalter and a pious card with her effigy are enclosed.
