First published in 1864 under the title "Los Proverbios por Don Francisco de Goya". There were 9 editions from 1864 to 1936 (Pierre Gassier and Juliet Wilson, Life and Works of Francisco Goya, Office du Livre, Editions Vilo, n° 1571, proverb 10). The first edition does not include the order numbers of the plates that were engraved for the second edition of 1875.
