Born in Lyon, Simon Saint-Jean acquired in the 1840s a reputation as a brilliant painter of flowers, notably by exhibiting at the Paris Salon. He appeared in the French collections of the Duke of Morny, Paul Perrier, and Pillet-Will but also in the great European collections (Herford, Demidoff, Galitzine and Radziwill). Still life painting of flowers and fruit was a specialty of the Lyon school, whose artists sometimes provided cartoons for silks and fabrics.
