Eugène BOUDIN (1824-1898)La Touques à Trouville, 1890Oil on canvas.signed and dated lower right.back label bearing #1669 Boudin54 x 75 cmIn the early 1890s, Eugène Boudin produced several oil paintings depicting the Touques River, upstream from the port of Trouville. As usual, the composition varies very little between versions. Only the multiple and changing lights of the day and the season bring variations that the artist analyzes with subtlety (La Touque, 1891, Berwick Museum and Art Gallery; La Touque, 1893, Lisieux, Museum of Art and History). Already in the 19th century, some untrained eyes reproached him for his lack of variety and the monotony of his work. But Boudin was a precursor, inspiring the series that Monet developed from 1889. He wrote to Vicat on February 16, 1888, "I was too content to be an active improviser: I was looking too much for the fleeting effects of the sky and the sea.
