[Sixteenth century book]. DONI (Anton Francesco); CHAPPUYS (Gabriel); [CHAPPUYS (François)]. Les mondes célestes, terrestres et infernaux... tirez des oeuvres de Doni,... par Gabriel Chappuis Tourangeau. Since, reveuz, corrigez & augmentez du Monde des cornuz, by F. C. T. [François Chappuys]. In Lyon, for Estienne Michel, 1580. two parts in one volume in-8, [8] f., 476 [i.e. 477] p., [1] f. ; 264 p., [3] f. (the 1st blank), fig, contemporary brown calf, spine recently replaced, with 5 raised bands, gilt title, gilt fillet at the edges, red edges, corners restored (boards cracked, title a little faded, pale sporadic angular halos, some browning and soiling not serious, corners missing in the margin of 2 limp. f.; 3 f. of the table erroneously bound in at the end of the volume; one leaf of the said table, H1, missing). Second edition of the first translation into French of this curious work, mixing dialogues and visionary stories, curiosities, moral and bizarre thoughts, composed by the Italian satirical writer Anton Francesco Doni (1513-1574), who was at one time close to Aretinus. It is followed by the original edition of the second part, due to François Chappuys from Tours. The illustration, composed of a dozen woodcut medallion vignettes at the head of each chapter, each preceded by a title and followed by a sentence, makes this edition similar to the books of emblems. Sign. *8 a-z8 A-G8; A-Q8 R4; H4 (blank), H2, H3. Added frontispiece from another 17th-century work, Le Page disgracié. Underlining, and marginal notes with manicules, all old.
