Folio. 266 x 186 mm. 18th-century brown spotted leather binding, spine with gold friezes, red boards. 192 unnumbered pages. 37 lines per page. Marking: 2A-2B8 a8 b-d6 e8 f-o6 p8 q-z6 &6 [con]6 [rum]6 A6 B8. Paper y1 incorrectly marked x2. Roman character with some passages in Greek. Blank spaces for guide letters. Title appears on verso of first paper "Auli Gelii Noctium Atticarum commentarii liber primus"; on verso of paper 2B8 date and name of printer "Brixiae, Per Boninus de Boninis de Regusia, Die tercio Martii, 1485." Watermark: bull's head with stem surmounted by a five-lobed flower (height 135 mm). Traces of use to binding, first and last sheets lightly soiled, nice specimen. Rare incunabulum, masterfully impressed in Brescia by Bonino de Boninis. Gellius collected in this work excerpts from the works of some 275 authors from many fields of knowledge such as grammar, rhetoric, etymology, medicine, philosophy, literary criticism, history, science, archaeology, and law and nature. It represents a survey of the major curiosities of human knowledge of his era, late 2nd century. The book is printed by Bonino de Boninis, born in Croatia, one of the first European printers. His first printing activities were in Venice in the late 1470s. He was in Brescia from 1483 onward and is credited with printing there about 40 books, mainly classical authors.
