Height: 180 cm. Width: 55 cm. Depth when unfolded: ca. 58 cm. Berlin/ Potsdam, Charlottenhof Palace, Berlin court workshop, ca. 1830. The furniture stands on curved runners that taper downward and are connected with a crossbar. The upward pulling side panels integrate the final secretary part with hinged writing flap. This is decorated at the front with a portrait of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in fine pearl embroidery, framed in silk, the writing side inside with the original green gold embossed oilcloth. The document compartments are also original with pivoting drawers and combined letter tray. Finally, there is a pivoting mirror above with the original mirror glass. All hardware, lock and key are original. Note 1: A similar secretary illustrated in Baugilde magazine, 1934, issue 14, p. 494. Note 2: "The unusual combination of mantelpiece and writing furniture goes back to English models of the 18th century, of which Thomas Sheraton is the best known. In Berlin, a patent for this invention was successfully filed in 1805 by the ebenist Adam Friedrich Voigt, with which this type of furniture found its firm place in the consciousness of Berlin furniture art for the following decades and was taken up by architects such as Karls Friedrich Schinkel."
