Mbulu Ngulu reliquary figure, Southern Kota area, Obamba people (Gabon/Republic of Congo).
Wood, copper, brass.
Ancient and authentic object.
Height : 53 cm
In Kota country, relics from chiefs or notables were included by the great initiates in a reliquary basket called a mbulu. To this basket-reliquary was attached a wooden sculpture partially covered with copper or brass, made by the blacksmith-sculptor. The set was used during important ritual funeral ceremonies.
This example, a classic of the very expressive style with a prominent forehead, has two linear motifs under each eye, suggesting tears.
It is shown in an old photo, dated 1910, in the center among other works collected at the same time.
