Study for the second consignment from Rome by Henri Regnault, kept in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Marseille, made between 1867 and 1869. In his correspondence, he evokes the genesis of the painting, his hesitations and reworking of the composition; for the figure of Holofernes, his servant Lagraine served as a model, and he gave his Judith the features of Dolores, a cabaret singer he had met in Spain.
