The recto is a preparation for the lithograph Les Boueux (See Germain Bazin, Théodore Géricault: Étude critique, documents et catalog raisonné, Paris, La Bibliothèque des arts, Wildenstein Institute, Tome VII, 1997, n°2499, p. 205). The bags of oats have been removed from the final composition.
