GUILLAUME APOLLINAIRE (1880-1918)
AUTOGRAPHIC LETTER SIGNED [to Louis PERCEAU]. 3 pages in-8 in ink, circa 1912. Autograph letter addressed by Guillaume Apollinaire to the writer Louis Perceau in which Apollinaire alludes to his stay in prison following the theft of the Mona Lisa.
Wrongly suspected of the theft of the Mona Lisa, Apollinaire will be imprisoned for five days at La Santé in 1911.
It is also about the work L'Enfer de la Bibliothèque nationale, dedicated to erotic works, written by Apollinaire in collaboration with Fernand Fleuret and Louis Perceau, published in 1913.
I thank you for your letter and I believe that I have kept the esteem of honest people. It seems iniquitous that there should be laws against friendship. Vallette [director of the Mercure de France] is on vacation, I don't know if he gave the book to compose... I didn't know at all that why you are being prosecuted was so important, and now that I have tried prison I understand that exile is preferred...
