FRENCH SCHOOL, circa 1700, entourage of François de TROY Portrait of the Duke of Maine Canvas. 130 x 98 cm Carved wood frame, French work of the XVIIIth century. The eldest son of Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan, legitimized in 1673, Louis Auguste de Bourbon was recognized as to inherit the throne of France in the absence of legitimate princes. At the death of the king, he received the command of the troops of the King's Household that the Regent, Philippe d'Orléans, took away from him following the annulment of Louis XIV's will. The Duke of Maine kept the superintendence of the education of Louis XV. He organizes in his castle of Sceaux a literary circle where was born the conspiracy of Cellamare to depose the Regent in 1718. Discovered, he he was dismissed from his position. We can compare our painting with an engraving by Pierre Devret (Musée du domaine de Sceaux, inventory 84.59.6).
