Charles Theodore of Bavaria was elector of Bavaria from 1777 to 1799. Protector of the arts, he founded in 1757, in
an academy of drawing and sculpture in Mannheim in 1757, as well as an academy of sciences with a cabinet of curiosities
in 1763.
For the pose of the figure and the architectural background, the artist was inspired by two engravings by I. Smith after portraits
by Peter Lely.
