FRENCH SCHOOL circa 1800, after Rembrandt
Portrait with a feathered beret
Canvas
Old restorations, scratches.
62 x 47 cm
Our painting is a very good quality reproduction of the composition by Rembrandt van Rijn, kept in the
Mautrithuis in The Hague and dated around 1635-1640, with the same dimensions (the original is on panel). Belonging to
Prince William V of Orange-Nassau (Wilhelm V), the painting was transferred to Paris following the war between France and the United Provinces and exhibited in the Louvre, in the Napoleon Museum from 1795 to 1815, where it was probably copied. Rather than a literal self-portrait, it is now considered a "tronie", a character figure inspired by Rembrandt's own features.
