Our drawing is part of an ambitious project for the redevelopment of the "new" part of the Palais des États in Dijon, entrusted in 1731 to Jacques "V" Gabriel, the first architect of the King. This plan is the projected elevation of a wing between the two existing colonnaded pavilions. Never realized, this construction would have answered a need for space for offices, a clerk's office and apartments for the elected officials of the Parliament of the States of Burgundy. On June 30, 1731, Gabriel drew up an estimate and on June 21 a descriptive estimate. It is between these two dates that this plan was most probably realized. Indeed, the finances of the States of Burgundy were judged insufficient by the elected officials to pursue the project in its entirety and there was never any question of this wing thereafter (See: M. Gallet and Y. Bottineau (Dir.), Les Gabriel, Paris, Éditions A. et J. Picard, 2nd ed., 2004, p. 80-9).
