Figure of Winter
Three pencils and pastel touch.
(Blue paper insolate).
31 x 24 cm
We can compare this head study with the figure of Winter in the lower center of the painting Éole, porté sur les nuages, déchaîne les vents et les frimas or L'Hiver (see : J. Delaplanche, Noël-Nicolas Coypel 1690-1734, Paris, Arthena, 2004, p. 41 and 43).
No title or information on this work, as well as for its counterpart L'Automne, is known before the Revolution. Both are dated 1727 and presumed to be part of a cycle of the four unfinished or partially lost seasons. The Winter is now kept in the reserves of the Musée National du Château in Versailles.
