Théodore Deck was a major actor of the revival of the ceramics having operated in the second half of the XIXth century.
half of the XIXth century. While the classical models are progressively abandoned, the artists turn to the techniques, colors
turned to the techniques, colors and models of the East. Deck knew how to reappropriate these techniques
without pastiche, resulting in the famous "Deck Blue", halfway between the Turkish earthenware of Iznik
Iznik and Chinese earthenware that he often embellishes with delicate characters, flowers and painted birds. The quest for the
monumental stimulated by the World's Fair leads him to create pieces in spectacular format,
like his famous "Alhambra" vase presented in 1862 in London. However, rare are on the market
works of large size of the ceramist. The one we are presenting is therefore exceptional for its
its dimensions, but also its abundant decoration, a true demonstration of the technical and
artistic skills of Theodore Deck.
