The artist and the Pyramids
Giacometti was fascinated early on by the economy of means that characterizes Egyptian art. The artist's first encounter with original works of ancient Egypt took place during a trip to Florence in 1920, then to Rome, where Giacometti stayed
and made sketches at the Vatican Museum. The hieratic posture, the advancing chin, the fixed gaze: everything in this drawing is designed to emphasize the gracefulness of the head carriage and the evocative power of a face whose entire structure is captured in a few strokes of the pen.
