Circle of Jan Both (Utrecht, 1618/20 - 1652)
"Italianate Landscape"
Oil on canvas. 121 x 147 cm.
Jan Both was a Dutch painter noted for being the main pioneer of the Italianate landscape in the Netherlands in the seventeenth century, specifically in the city of Utrecht, as reported by museums such as the Prado or the National Gallery in the United Kingdom.
The great similarity of his work to this painting, especially in the treatment of the trees and the partly cloudy skies occupying the upper two thirds of the painting, and leaving the characters in a more anecdotal level of narrative, lead us to believe that the painter was very close to the work done by Jan Both.
