Bruges school of the 17th century Susanna in the bath and the two old people. Oil/canvas, unsigned, 53 x 35 cm, mounted, restored and retouched, framed 68 x 52 cm.- Provenance: Noble family property Bremen.- The painting shows - unlike usual representations of the biblical scene - Susanna not in the moment of fright and active defense of the old people harassing her, but emphasizes through her transfigured gaze virtue and steadfastness in the face of imminent danger. The artist varies with his own means a composition by Hendrik Goltzius (1558-1616/17), which has been handed down through an engraving by his student Saenredam (1565-1607). Suzanne Laemers of the RKD Den Haag suspects, based on stylistic features, that this is a master active in Bruges.
