Focke, Wilhelm H. 1878 - Bremen - 1974. Focke's reconnaissance plane off Helgoland. 1916. gouache and watercolor/ paper, unsigned, 29.4 x 39.4 cm, Hadré. Focke, ill. p. 91, margins irregularly trimmed, sheet minimally yellowed, verso male nude studies as well as at the corners mounting remnants, which settle brightly on the front, framed behind glass 31.5 x 41.5 cm.- Focke was deployed in World War I after a serious injury from 1916 as a flying reconnaissance plane and rescue pilot over the North Sea. During his deployment at the Norderney sea air station, he met his longtime painter friend Poppe Folkerts. Focke designed new types of aircraft during this time, including seaplanes.
