"Alphonse Lemerre commissioned Félicien Rops to produce illustrations to accompany a reprint of Les Diaboliques. These illustrations were not the object of a collaboration between Barbey and Rops. It was only in 1886, during the second wave of the reissue, that Rops' illustrations accompanied the book, though without being an integral part of it, for those who wished to purchase them." Illustrations of the 6 short stories to which are attached the frontispiece, the preface, the afterword and a portrait of Barbey d'Aurevilly, engraved by Rajon.
