When Antoni Roux (1833-1914) commissioned a suite of the Fables of the Fountain from the symbolist painter Gustave Moreau, he did not imagine the success that this undertaking would meet. A first suite of 25 sheets was produced for the 1881 exhibition. In 1885-1886, the patron commissioned the engraver Félix Bracquemond to interpret some of his masterpieces, which were exhibited in the Goupil gallery in Paris, then at the 1887 Salon.
