Publisher himself, Charles-Louis-Fleury Panckoucke is the son of the publisher Charles-Joseph Panckoucke (1736-1798). A great collector of antiques, he held a salon with his brilliant wife Ernestine, in their hotel de Thou, in Paris. There, they received Goethe, Lamartine and Musset. It is in this hotel in the rue des Poitevins that the bust of the publisher carved in marble in 1831 by Louis-Marie Guichard was kept. This sculptor, a pupil of Pajou, made a fine career as a portraitist, mainly in Russia where he stayed for ten years. He exhibited for the last time at the Salon of 1831, probably the bust of Panckoucke. Guichard also painted the portrait of Fleury Panckoucke's son Ernest (now in the collections of the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, presented as an anonymous portrait, Inv. H. [CR}CK-2718).
