LEMOINE (Georges). Alphabet book. [Original drawings and files related to the creation of the book]. [Gargilesse, summer 2019-Paris, early 2022]. 21 ff. A4, 27 softbound boards (31 x 23 and 31 x 21 cm) with sepia and chocolate pencil drawings, (6) ff. of correspondences, (2) ff. of contract. Inserted in a four-ring binder (31 x 27 cm), "Alphabet Leiris" written on the spine. Workbook, with the most precious documentation, accompanied by the twenty-seven original drawings made by the artist Georges Lemoine for the Alphabécédaire de Michel Leiris to be published by the Michaël Seksik bookstore in 2022. Georges Lemoine, in 2019, draws the letters of an alphabet book that is close to his heart, "from the long story of Michel Leiris in the first volume of "La Règle du jeu I, Biffures, NrF 1975, pages 40 to 76. Preceded by a very precise file listing the binder and the different locations in his drawers, his computer or his library in Gargilesse. Letters made and technical description, list of original drawings not retained, etc., and the missives appearing at the end of the binder. Letter to Antoine Gallimard of December 25, 2019, to which he attached the model. The artist renounces "the adventure of the Vatican Caves for the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the birth of André Gide", was unable to continue the project of Isabelle because of illness. "In the meantime, I worked (on my own initiative) on the illustration of a text by Michel Leiris". Georges Lemoine explains his project and hopes for an edition. Attached are the e-mails to Alban Cerisier, on the same subject. And the answer of Antoine Gallimard "who did not find a collection in [his] publishing house, susceptible to shelter such a project." Follows the contract of the Michaël Seksik Bookstore. Twenty-seven rarest original drawings with compositions in shaded forms done in colored pencils, sepia "Red" and "Chocolate" Derwent Drawing, captioned, dated and signed in pencil by the artist. [Some with his dry stamp]. The M includes two drawings. The artist follows Michel Leiris' short sentences and illustrates them at face value. "The A turns into a Jacob's ladder (or double house painter's ladder)." To: "The Z into a lightning bolt that can only be that of Zeus or Jehovah." The original drawings are preceded by a tracing with an applied paper rectangle bearing the underlined initial of Leiris' text that will be included in the book. Remarkable set, in perfect condition.
