Useful primer or small table of arts and crafts. A work where children can, while learning to read, draw some ideas of the Society. Decorated with 24 engraved figures. -Learn to the Child to become a Man- At the Counter of Industry. Leipsic. At N. Glücksberg, Miodowa Street under the colonnade No. 497. Warsaw. Elementarz Uzyteczny, czyli Krotki obraz kunsztow i rzemiosl; dzielo z ktorégo dzieci, uczac sie czytac, moga nabrac nieiakich wyobrazen spolecznosci. [Same text and address in Polish]. [Circa 1815]. In-12 (16 x 10.5 cm). (2) title ff., 92 pp, (12) engraved and stenciled plates: full green grained percaline, boards cold-stamped with an ornate diamond pattern, modern protective slipcase. (Binding of the publisher). Unique and rare edition. Bilingual French-Polish alphabet book decorated with twelve engraved and stenciled plates, each with two illustrations. Progressive alphabets, syllabary, words, sentences and fable to spell precede "l'Histoire des Arts et Métiers gravés dans ce Livret". There are twelve plates with two engravings each (instead of six with four engravings) and the illustrations are different. The occurrences remain similar, with the trades listed in alphabetical order (two for the letter J, no K, no W (in French, but added in Polish, and no Z). For each trade a didactic text. This is followed by texts entitled "Des arts et métiers", "De la monnaie d'or et d'argent" and Le Coucou paresseux, fable. Punctuation marks and numbers on the last three pages are not translated into Polish. Only one copy in Princeton University Library. Well preserved. Scattered foxing mainly on the text pages. Small reinforcement on the first flyleaf. Provenance: Bertha A. Holbrook, American collector of primers, with her handwritten bookplate.
