Instructive primer on arts and crafts. A work in which a child, while having fun, can learn about the most useful arts for society. At Ayné, Bookseller, rue Mercière, n° 11. Lyon. Year XIV-1805. In-12 (16 x 10 cm). Frontispiece, 96 pp. 6 engraved plates : red half calf, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets, title page, marbled paper boards (Binding of the period). First sought-after edition. An engraved frontispiece signed Giraud cadet, "Les Métiers et les Arts sont nés de nos besoins" and an illustrated title page are followed by an alphabetical box, alphabets, syllables and words to spell. Leçon aux Enfans and fable à épeler, decorated with a woodcut, precede the illustrated alphabet. Six engraved plates composed of four illustrations each, one for each letter of the alphabet (two J, two V, no K, W, X, Z). Initial at the top, followed by the name of the trade to be spelled. Twenty-four trades: Wheelwright, Distiller, Gasser, Intaglio printer, Cup player, Lens maker, Navigator, Painter, etc. Each trade is explained by a short didactic text on the facing pages. Punctuation marks and numbers are placed before the second part of the book entitled: "Petit spectacle de la nature; Ou entretiens sur les premières connoissances qu'on peut enseigner aux Enfans". In the form of a walk in the fields, each "spectacle" is illustrated with a woodcut and lamp-ends: The Meadow, Wheat, The Vine, Vegetables and Grass, Navigation, Quarries and Mines, The Sun and The Moon. No copy of this first edition referenced. A well preserved copy with a small restoration on the corners.
