Ejagham Crest, Nigeria Basketry, wood, animal leather H. 28 cm The crest is made of a woven rattan skullcap topped by a wooden head covered with animal leather, the eyes and teeth are made of small bleached wooden plates, the temples and cheeks show keloids typical of the scarification marks worn in the past by the Ejagham populations. The eyebrows are enhanced with black lines. This type of crest belonged to associations of warriors or hunters and was danced during funerals or initiation rituals.
